On the back side we found HDMI, USB and power. So while playing PS4 on HDMI2, the player would automatically switch to HDMI1 if we pushed a video from a phone to the Nexus Player. For example, we had Nexus Player connected to a TV on HDMI1. Nexus Player also supports HDMI CEC - just like Chromecast. Besides that the remote app works well, but is not yet available for iPhone/iPad. You can feel how you want about that, but in the end it takes away from the user interface on Android TV. Unlike the Apple TV that requires every app to use its built-in keyboard, Google is not as strict. Unfortunately, the keyboard does not work in every app. There is also an app for Android smartphones and tablets that will let you control the box using voice search and also bring up a keyboard for search. Some early buyers have experienced problems where the remote disconnects from the box, but during our testing period we did not experience that even once. However, it has one big advantage over most remotes as it is bluetooth based, meaning that you can point anywhere. Google’s remote is made from matte black plastic, and unfortunately it feels very light and very cheap. Google has clearly found inspiration in the Apple TV remote, but unfortunately not in Apple’s choice of materials. The remote is simply and a far departure from the laughable remote that Google imagined with Google TV back in the days. It largely resembles the Apple TV, except that it is a little bit larger and rounder, but you can easily hide it behind a TV. If you have no intention of buying a new TV you can add Android TV with a box such as Nexus Player, which is a small, round black, shiny plastic puck. So far, Sony, Sharp and Philips are confirmed as Smart TV partners and from spring 2015 all three will start implementing Android TV as the platform in their TVs. We need full-fledged TV platforms in the future if we want to get past the current paradigm.Īndroid TV is a full platform and will be available in media streamer boxes - such as this Asus Nexus Player - game consoles and Smart TVs. Google is clearly thinking bigger here, as Android TV is a complete TV platform that can accommodate everything from streaming services and games to home automation and more. It has no TV interface and it does not support real gaming. Chromecast is a cheap receiver that needs a phone. Well, it has to do with the long-term strategy. More recently, Google launched Chromecast, a small and affordable TV dongle, and has seen huge success. It was a spectacular failure that almost forced Logitech to file for bankruptcy. You might remember that Google launched "Google TV" a few years ago, but you have probably heard little about it since. Subscribe to our Newsletter, RSS, Facebook or twitter to receive notice when new reviews are online.įirst impressionsTo start off, we probably need to go over a little history first. Google is one of the few that could revolutionize the TV industry, but is Android TV the future? Join us to find out in this in-depth review of Nexus Player and Android TV. Despite having a few TV platforms such as webOS, Amazon’s Fire TV, and Samsung’s in-house platform to pick from already, software on TVs is still relatively new territory. We know Google’s plans now, but have no idea what Apple’s long-term view for TV is. Android TV is based on TV apps, but will also enable TV gaming and could potentially morph into a full-fledged game console.Īfter Apple and Google have seen success in the mobile market they are looking to expand their eco systems into other areas. Google hopes to transform the TV market into something resembling the phone market, where Android TV is a shared platform between all those manufacturers who want to participate. Google unveiled Android TV a few months ago at its yearly developer conference, and Nexus Player is the first product built on the new ambitious TV platform. Rocio had to share my attention with old generals and chapter drafts for far too long. Last, and by no means least, I would like to thank my family, and in particular my wife Rocio, for their help and understanding. Without him, I would not be where I am today. Even though his role in the project was only a small one I would like to thank Professor Sir Hew Strachan from Oxford University for his continuous support. I would also like to thank the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, in particular the Director of Studies Sean McKnight, my colleagues in the War Studies Department and Andrew Orgill and his team from the library. My role as the editor was made even easier by the outstanding support provided by Marcus Cowper and his team at Osprey. All the contributors worked with a high level of professionalism which made my work as the editor an enjoyable task. It is often said that looking after academics is worse than herding cats, but this was most definitely not the case in this project. You need them, literally, only as a brute mass to pull the serpentine lawnmower-style cord on a massive crane. The world is beautiful and important, not its inhabitants. It’s truly gorgeous, but what’s interesting about it is the contrast it marks. Granted, a little girl freaking the fuck out over her missing carekeeper is tonally out of whack with the game’s storybook aesthetic and, anyway: look at this game. You never get to deepen that relationship. It’s curtains down and you never get to to hear the point. A code name: “The handyman.” He gets nabbed in the beginning of the game while telling you a story, and without dispensing spoilers, you find him in the end but you never hear the rest. I’m paraphrasing, but Lumi shrugs this off as no biggie: “He just always wanted me to call him Granddad.” Stranger still, everyone else in Lumino City knows him by another name. The world is beautiful and important, not its inhabitants. They’re just things to ask to do other things. As you progress and meet a handful of other characters she feels comfortable opening up to, there’s a revelation: You don’t even know your own grandfather’s real name. And, of course, there’s your character, Lumi. There’s the lonely ship captain who misses not human companionship but the ocean blue. There’s the man who forgot his wife’s anniversary (and pants), and he needs you to learn their song on guitar to soothe her sour mood. The vast majority of your exchanges in Lumino City are like this -transactional and fractured, but wholly critical. It’s possible, and I thought that too until the above setpiece. “This is no different than any of the other roundabout interactions you have in most point-and-click games. “But wait,” I’m sure you’re likely thinking. It’s that latter thought that Lumino City is indirectly exploring: What is the world like if we don’t communicate with one another? You leave the neighbors behind, presumably never to speak to one another again. Then down you go again, with the can opener. She won’t do it without a guarantee that he won’t lose it. But you can’t even ask, since the shopkeep has problems of his own: His inventory system is all fudged up so would you mind helping him first? Once you get that squared away, you have to help the other neighbors: Tell the lady two ladders down that the guy another ladder down needs to borrow her can opener to eat some food. In true adventure-game fashion, you want them to help you with something to further your own agenda (in this case, to operate a crane), so up you go to tell the baker that his neighbor three ladders down wants a bun as payment for helping build his shop. Rather than intrude upon them with your drama or even comment on the absurdity of their domiciles, up and down you climb to relay messages for people who could lean outside and talk to one another. About a third of the way into Lumino City, you set aside your curiously slowpoked search for your kidnapped grandfather to play messenger for two pairs of neighbors who live in cliffside apartments. Luckily for you, this feature can be used in your Vue 2 application today by using the Vue Composition API plugin. This is an alternative syntax that you might choose to use based on the three reasons I formerly mentioned. This is not the new way we code components in Vue 3. Vue 3’s biggest feature (so far) is the Composition API, which provides an alternate syntax for writing larger components, reusing code across components, and using TypeScript.
